The 20th anniversary of the “Peggy and Gary Edwards Distinguished ALS Lectures”, established to recognize the exceptional contribution of physicians in combating and alleviating the severity of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) worldwide, was celebrated in Houston, USA, on November 21.
This year, the prestigious award was presented by the Houston Methodist Hospital, Neurological Institute, together with Prof. Stanley H. Appel, to Prof. Vincenzo Silani, Prof. Seung Hyun Kim from Seoul, South Korea, and Prof. Weidong Le from Zhejiang, China, all of whom trained at the Medical Center of Houston.
“The important recognition,” confirms Prof. V. Silani, “brought me back to where I trained during my early years, when Prof. Guglielmo Scarlato sent me to enrich my education at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, directed by Prof. Stanley H. Appel, who contributed greatly to my growth not only as a neurologist but above all as a researcher. Alongside lifelong friends, in one of the most prestigious hospitals in the world, and in the presence of a distinguished audience and researchers, a historic event took place. Each participant described the results achieved in their respective countries throughout their careers. Regarding Italy, I had the opportunity to highlight the achievements reached at IRCCS Istituto Auxologico – “Centro Dino Ferrari” – University of Milan, which today boasts a ALS-dedicated center recognized worldwide.”
“Alongside the care of patients and caregivers,” continues V. Silani, “there is intense laboratory activity which, within the framework of international collaborations, has contributed to the discovery of new genes, the identification of biomarkers, and the study of patient-derived stem cells differentiated into motor neurons, providing models to understand the pathogenesis of the disease. All of this has always been aimed at identifying a definitive therapy for ALS. Milan has also contributed to defining the cognitive and behavioral disorders of ALS patients, opening new interpretative avenues for the pathology. Recognition for this long and dedicated work has come over time, but foremost is the growth of new generations devoted to studying the disease.”
“The ongoing relationship with the Methodist Hospital of Houston, and with Prof. Appel in particular,” clarifies Prof. Silani, “has been enriched and consolidated over the years also through participation in the Scientific Committee of the Associazione “Centro Dino Ferrari” ETS and various visits to Milan, fostering deep friendship and shared cultural engagement in the development of the Centro Dino Ferrari.”
“The event in Houston,” concludes Prof. Silani, “remains a memorable occasion that recognizes a tradition, dedication, and brilliant achievements, while opening collaborative channels with China and Korea, united by a common educational background. To Prof. Stanley H. Appel, close to Milan, goes the recognition for having contributed to the enrichment of Milanese science and to the growth of the Centro Dino Ferrari.”
