{"id":4613,"date":"2026-09-30T14:21:36","date_gmt":"2026-09-30T12:21:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.centrodinoferrari.com\/senza-categoria\/giornata-mondiale-dellatassia-ricerca-e-testimonianze-per-guardare-al-futuro\/"},"modified":"2026-10-01T10:59:02","modified_gmt":"2026-10-01T08:59:02","slug":"giornata-mondiale-dellatassia-ricerca-e-testimonianze-per-guardare-al-futuro","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.centrodinoferrari.com\/en\/news\/dallassociazione\/giornata-mondiale-dellatassia-ricerca-e-testimonianze-per-guardare-al-futuro\/","title":{"rendered":"Friedreich&#8217;s Ataxia: research and personal stories to look toward the future"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>World Ataxia Awareness Day <\/strong>is a valuable opportunity to talk about ataxias: a group of neurological disorders that are still little known, which can progressively impair <strong>movement,<\/strong> <strong>balance<\/strong>, <strong>speech<\/strong>, and <strong>independence<\/strong>, significantly impacting the lives of patients and their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 2000, this day has served as a moment for <strong>awareness<\/strong>, sharing, and <strong>education<\/strong>, as well as a call to <strong>support the scientific work <\/strong>needed to create new therapeutic prospects and improve the quality of life for those living with these conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To highlight the value of this commitment, we have gathered diverse and complementary voices: that of Prof. <strong>Yvan Torrente<\/strong>\u2014<strong>Full Professor<\/strong> of <strong>Neurology at the University of Milan,<\/strong> neurologist at the <strong>Fondazione IRCCS Ca&#8217; Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico di Milano<\/strong>, and researcher at the &#8220;<strong>Centro Dino Ferrari<\/strong>&#8220;\u2014alongside the personal accounts of <strong>Marina <\/strong>and <strong>Giorgia<\/strong>, who both live with <strong>Friedreich&#8217;s Ataxia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his contribution, Prof. Torrente focuses specifically on Friedreich&#8217;s Ataxia, a disease at the heart of his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centrodinoferrari.com\/en\/progetti\/nanoparticelle-doro-e-ricerca-una-nuova-speranza-per-latassia-di-friedreich\/\">research work.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<strong>Friedreich&#8217;s Ataxia is a severe genetic disorder that affects not only the central nervous system but also other organs and tissues, progressively impairing movement and independence in affected individuals<\/strong>,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recent years, new avenues have opened up. Among these are <strong>gene therapy<\/strong> approaches\u2014such as replacing the mutated gene with a healthy copy or repairing the altered gene\u2014and the study of new molecules and experimental drugs designed to improve the function of organs and tissues affected by the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scientific progress also directly impacts patients&#8217; daily lives. Over the past decade, <strong>personalized rehabilitation protocols, multidisciplinary approaches<\/strong> to prevent cardiac and respiratory complications, and increasingly targeted pathways in s<strong>peech therapy<\/strong> have been developed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The words of <strong>Marina<\/strong> and <strong>Giorgia<\/strong> serve as a powerful reminder of how much of a difference all of this can make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<strong>I believe that scientific research is extremely important for improving our condition<\/strong>,\u201d says Marina. \u201c<strong>Knowing that so many people are dedicated to these studies gives me the energy and hope to keep going<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Giorgia also shares how the work of researchers serves as a source of trust and confidence: \u201c<strong>Knowing that a cure could be possible, even if we don&#8217;t have one yet, is still very positive and helps you never give up.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their stories remind us that supporting research means contributing to the development of new treatments, as well as to care management that is increasingly attentive, multidisciplinary, and aligned with people&#8217;s needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<strong>Supporting research means moving forward together<\/strong>,\u201d concludes Prof. Torrente. \u201c<strong>It means looking toward the future<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Together for research, we turn dreams into the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>World Ataxia Awareness Day is a valuable opportunity to talk about ataxias: a group of neurological disorders that are still little known, which can progressively impair movement, balance, speech, and independence, significantly impacting the lives of patients and their families.
