Clinical studies

In addition to basic scientific research, Stem Cell Laboratory is involved in translational applications of preclinical data.
While presently preparing the required documents and CRFs for an autograft using engineered stem cells in DMD patients, we have already reached promising outcomes in the treatment of heterogeneous pathologies.
Since Stem Cell Laboratory foundation, in 2002, Dr. Torrente has been involved in outstanding studies, as the one which saw him as coordinator of “Progetto Uomo”, the first Phase I clinical study for the in vivo validation of autologous stem cells transplantation in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, approved by the Ethical Committee of Policlinico Hospital and the ISS (Istituto Superiore di Sanità).

More recently, Lab clinical activity has met encouraging results in the use of stem cells after injuries.
In 2009, a trial for partial nerve motor and sensor restoration through a combined use of scaffolds and epithelial stem cells has been managed at Fondazione IRCCS Ca’ Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlico.
At the beginning of 2013, at the same Hospital, a spinal cord injured patient has been treated using a combination of platelet gel and autologous stem cells. The same patient is being monitored and follow up has shown positive results.
In 2010, a clinical trial in collaboration with San Raffaele Hospital has been led for an autologous transplantation of mesoangioblast in DMD patients.

In 2011, Dr. Torrente has promoted a study using autologous stem cells in two patients affected by facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy, at “Pietra Corona” Hospital, Pietra Ligure (SV)

Futhermore, since 2012, we have been using BIODEX SYSTEM 3 QUICK S/N, CE compliant, for quantative muscular force testing in patients affected by neuromuscular and degenerative diseases, whose deambulation ability is highly compromised. Biodex system analysis is of great relevance and support to clinical practise at Policlinico Hospital.
