Supervisor of the Laboratory of Neuroscience since 2003, she graduated in Biology at the University of Milan and has great experience in molecular biology and genetics. From 1994 to 2003 she worked at Ospedale Policlinico in several projects on positional cloning and gene hunting. In 1999 she got her PhD in Biotechnological Applications (SAB), University of Milan and in 2000 she was Visiting Scientist at the Children’s Hospital, Philadelphia, U.S.. Since 2005 she is Assistant Professor of Neurology at the Department of Pathophysiology and Transplantation, University of Milan Medical School. Since 2004 her research activity focuses on the study of the genetic architecture of familial and sporadic ALS and on the physiopathologic bases of ALS associated to defects in RNA-binding proteins and RNA metabolism.
After graduating in Biology at the University of Milan, from 1994 she worked as Researcher at Fondazione Matarelli, Milan, where she concluded her Ph.D. in experimental Hematology. In 1997 she spent one year as post-doctoral in genetic therapy at the Sunnybrook Health Science Center, Toronto. From 2001 she mainly worked on projects concerning the differentiation of hemopoietic and mesenchymal stem cells and the development of protocols of cellular therapies on animal models of neurodegenerative diseases. In 2013 she started working at the Laboratory of Neuroscience, IRCCS Istituto Auxologico Italiano, in research projects on stem cells.
After her graduation in Biology at the University of Milan-Bicocca, in 2011 she began working at the Laboratory of Neuroscience, IRCCS Istituto Auxologico Italiano. In 2013 she was admitted to the School in Medical Genetics, University of Milan. Her research activity focuses on the genetics of ALS with projects of exome sequencing and validation of novel causative variants. She is involved in the organization of the DNA biological bank of the Laboratory and in the study of the genetic epidemiology of ALS in Italy.
She is a Research Fellow at the Department of Pathophysiology and Transplantation, University of Milan Medical School, IRCCS Istituto Auxologico Italiano. She graduated in Biology at the University of Catania, where she completed her Ph.D. in 2005 in Neurobiology after a three-year formative period in the U.S., first at the Blanchette Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute, Rockville, and then at the New York Medical College. In 2008 she completed her Ph.D. in Clinical Biochemistry and Clinical Molecular Biology, University of Milan. She began working at the Laboratory of Neuroscience in 2006 where she is actively involved in research projects aimed at the understanding of the role of the RNA-binding proteins TDP-43 and FUS in ALS pathogenesis.
After her graduation in Biology at the University of Milan, she obtained her PhD in Applied Genetics, University of Milan. From 1997 to 1998 she moved as a Postdoctoral Fellow to Prof. M. Pandolfo’s Lab. Centre de Recherche de l’Université de Montréal, Canada. After working at the Istituto Neurologico “C. Besta” (1999-2001) on neural stem cells with Prof. A. Vescovi and Prof. E. Parati, she joined the Laboratory of Neuroscience in 2001. Since 2003 she is Research Assistant of the IRCCS Istituto Auxologico Italiano, focused on the molecular/immunocytochemical characterization of human stem cells and on the optimization of new protocols for a cell therapy in animal models of neurodegenerative disease (ALS and Parkinson’s Disease).
Graduated in Biology and with a PhD in Human Genetics at the University of Milan, she has been working since 2003 as a Post Doctoral Researcher at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College of London. Being an expert of genome wide association studies (GWA), she actively contributed to the creation of the Italian SLAGEN Consortium for the collection of a huge cohort of 2000 Italian sporadic ALS patients. Collaborating with the major international groups for the study of genetics of sporadic ALS, she performed the most complete GWA study in ALS by analyzing 15.570 individuals. She is now analyzing the same international cohort to identify modifier genes associated to chromosome X and collaborating with Valentina Moskvina, Cardiff University, on an integrate study of ALS and Alzheimer’s Disease.
In 2012 she graduated in Healthy Biology, University of Catania and she spent a formative period at the U.O.C. of Clinical Pathology, P.O. S. Maria e S. Venera, Acireale. She joined the Laboratory of Neuroscience in 2013 as a Research fellow where she is involved in the study of the pathogenetic mechanisms associated to RNA-binding proteins in ALS.
After graduating in Biology, she worked a research fellow at IRCCS Fondazione G.B. Bietti. In 2011 she obtained her Ph.D. in Physiology, University of Milan, with a thesis about the mechanisms of neurodegeneration in Glaucoma. She spent a long period of her Ph.D. at the Georgia Health Sciences University, U.S.. In these years she developed expertise in the field of molecular/cell biology and microscopy, as well as in the handling of different animal models. Since 2012 she has been working at the IRCCS Istituto Auxologico Italiano where she studies the molecular mechanisms causing Parkinson’s Disease.
She graduated in Pharmaceutical Biotechnologies in 2005, University of Milan, where she also achieved a Ph.D. in Endocrinological and Metabolical Sciences in 2009. From 2005 to 2009 she worked with Prof A. Poletti, University of Milan, on the pathogenetic mechanisms associated to motor neuron neurodegenerative diseases (ALS and Spinal Muscular Bulbar Atrophy). She has been working in the lab as a Post-Doc Researcher since 2010 studying RNA metabolism and post-transcriptional processes regulated by the RNA Binding proteins TDP-43 and FUS in ALS.
After graduating in Biology in 2009, she obtained the Ph.D. in Physiology, University of Milan, in 2012. Expert in Molecular and Cell Biology, she has competence in electrophysiological techniques applied to the study of ion channels. Since 2013 she has been working at the Laboratory of Neuroscience, IRCCS Istituto Auxologico italiano where she studies the mitochondrial alterations occurring in Huntington’s Disease.
Graduated in Pharmaceutical Biotechnologies, University of Milan, in 2001, she obtained her PhD in Medical Genetics, University of Milan, in 2007. She worked with Prof. V. Silani at Ospedale Policlinico, Milan, from 2001 to 2003 and then at the Laboratory of Neuroscience, IRCCS Istituto Auxologico Italiano. In 2010 she was Visiting Scientist at University of Alberta, Canada. She is team leader with projects studying the molecular bases of Huntington’s and Parkinson’s Diseases.
She graduated in Medical Biotechnologies and Molecular Medicine, University of Milan, in 2005, and she is currently a PhD student in Molecular Medicine, University of Milan. She has been working in the Laboratory of Neuroscience since 2006, where she is actively involved in the understanding of the genetic bases of familial ALS by discovering new causative genes through exome sequencing and of sporadic ALS by GWA studies. She is responsible of the genetic testing in ALS patients and of the ALS Biobank collecting different biological samples from patients.
Prof. Vincenzo Silani is the director of the Department of Neurology-Stoke Unit and of the Laboratory of Neuroscience since 2002 and is Professor of Neurology. After having graduated in Medicine, he completed the Residency program in both Neurology and Neurosurgery at the University of Milan Medical School cum laude. He spent a long formative period in the U.S. , at first at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, then at Columbia University in New York gaining also the ECFMG-USA examination. Being an expert of in vitro human neural cell models, he widely engaged in staminology, transplantology and, more lately, genetics related to neurodegerative disorders. He founded a group (SLAGEN) for the genetic study of ALS/FTD and coordinated different research groups becoming also Co-Chairman of the ALS and Frontotemporal dementia Subspeciality Scientific Panel (SSPs) of the European Academy of Neurology (EAN).
