Services and laboratories » Laboratory of Biochemistry, Genetic and Cell Culture

The Laboratory of Biochemistry and Genetics is one of the
diagnostic and research facilities of the Dino Ferrari Center of the Milan University.
It is located at the Padiglione Ponti of the “Ospedale Maggiore
Policlinico”.
Since 1985 the Laboratory studies the biochemical and molecular basis
of neuromuscular and neurodegenerative disorders.
In this field the Lab ha contributed to the aetiologic definition,
both for diagnostic and research purposes of the main inherited muscle
disorders: Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophies, limb girdle muscular
dystrophies
Inclusion body myositis, metabolic myopathy due to defects of glycogen
and glucose metabolism, defects of fatty acids utilization and transport
and mitochondrial disorders.
The impact of molecular biology has largely complemented in the last
years the approach to these disease. Furthermore a larger group of
inherited neurodegenerative disorders may be investigated such as spinal
muscular atrophy, and the familial forms of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis,
Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinson’s disease.
The use of in vitro cell culture led to the establishment of a Cell
Biology section and of a cell culture bank, whose availability within
the DNA and Tissue Biobank represents an important research resource.
The integration between clinically oriented research and basic sciences
educated a generation of neurologists to the challenges of complex
neurologic disorders, their aetiologic mechanisms, their different
pathogenesis and ti the experimental validation of innovative therapeutic
approaches. |
